Asphalt emulsion
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000288
A stable mixture of asphalt binder, water, and an emulsifying agent, allowing asphalt to be applied at lower temperatures than hot-mix asphalt. The emulsifier keeps fine asphalt droplets suspended in the water until application, at which point the water evaporates and the emulsion 'breaks' to form a continuous film. Emulsions are classified as anionic (negative charge) or cationic (positive charge), a property that determines their compatibility with specific types of mineral aggregates.
