Cutback

A type of asphalt binder produced by dissolving asphalt cement in a volatile petroleum solvent. The solvent reduces the viscosity of the asphalt, making it easier to apply at lower temperatures. Cutbacks are used in road construction for prime coats, tack coats, and cold mix asphalt.
