Automatic train control

A general class of onboard systems that enforce compliance with speed restrictions and signal indications, supplementing the operator's actions. If the train exceeds a permitted speed or passes a stop signal, the system automatically applies the brakes to slow or stop the train. Automatic Train Control (ATC) systems vary in complexity, from intermittent cab signaling checks to continuous speed supervision based on track circuit data.
