Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006778
A genus of hardy, long-lived perennial plants native to North America, also known as false indigo, belonging to the legume family. They are cultivated for their ornamental value, featuring tall spikes of pea-like flowers in shades of blue, yellow, or white, and for their ability to fix nitrogen in the soil. The common name derives from the historical use of some species, particularly Baptisia australis, by colonists as a substitute for true indigo in producing a blue dye.
