Batten

A thin strip of wood or metal used to cover the joint between two parallel boards or panels in siding and paneling applications. This board-and-batten method creates a weather-resistant exterior finish with a distinct vertical pattern. Battens are also fastened across a series of boards to hold them together, as in the construction of a simple door or gate.
