Batsman

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000461

The landing signal officer on an aircraft carrier, named for the paddle-shaped bats he once held to signal approaching pilots. Standing near the stern of the flight deck, he tells the pilot whether the aircraft is too high, too low, too fast, too slow or badly lined up, and can wave the aircraft off. The US Navy now calls the post landing signal officer (LSO), and the Royal Navy equivalent is the deck landing control officer.
