Batter

A slight backward slope given to a face that would otherwise be vertical, such as the inward lean of a retaining wall or the sides of a tower. The slope is stated as a ratio of horizontal offset to vertical rise, such as 1 in 12, or as an angle from the vertical. In metalwork, to batter means to beat metal repeatedly with a hammer, which flattens or dents it.
