Batter rule

A tool, also known as a batter gauge or batter level, used to set out and check inclined surfaces, such as the sloping face of an embankment or retaining wall. It consists of a vertical post with a horizontal arm and a plumb line or spirit level. The angle of the slope, or batter, is set by adjusting the position of the arm, often expressed as a ratio of horizontal run to vertical rise.
