Balloon
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000404
An uncontrolled increase in engine RPM (revolutions per minute) during an aircraft's landing approach, often caused by an abrupt increase in airspeed or a sudden gust of wind. This phenomenon can cause the aircraft to float above the runway, extending the landing distance. Pilots correct a balloon by reducing power and adjusting pitch to re-establish a stable descent rate.
