Blowback

The sudden expulsion of steam, hot gases, or other material from a locomotive's firebox or boiler. This event can occur due to a sudden pressure release or a malfunction in the combustion system. Blowback poses a severe safety risk to engine crew and can cause damage to the locomotive.
