Fire iron

Any of a set of long-handled tools used by the fireman to manage the fire in a steam locomotive's firebox. The set includes a long poker to break up clinkers, a rake for leveling the coal bed, and a slice bar for lifting coal that has fused to the grate. These tools were stored in brackets on the tender or the side of the locomotive cab for easy access.
