Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-000672

A Japanese woodblock printing technique that creates a subtle, graduated wash of color or tone, often used for skies or water. This effect is achieved by applying water and pigment to a dampened woodblock with a brush, then wiping away some of the color before printing. It produces soft, atmospheric transitions in the printed image.
