Catline

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001004

A rope or cable on a drilling rig, powered by a capstan-like device called a cathead, used for lifting and moving tools, equipment, and pipe on the rig floor. The line is manually wrapped around the rotating cathead, and the friction allows the operator to control the lift by applying tension to the rope. Due to safety concerns regarding entanglement, its use has been largely superseded by dedicated air or hydraulic hoists on modern rigs.
