Companding
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001268
A technique used in telecommunications to compress and then expand an analog signal, reducing the dynamic range for transmission and restoring it upon reception. This process improves the signal-to-noise ratio for signals with a wide dynamic range, particularly in voice communication systems. It is often implemented using logarithmic compression and expansion curves, such as the A-law or mu-law algorithms.
