Cotter

A wedge-shaped or tapered pin inserted through a hole in two or more parts to fasten them together or to prevent relative motion. It is often used in conjunction with a cotter pin or a split pin to secure the cotter itself. Cotters find application in connecting rods, valve stems, and other mechanical assemblies where a simple, removable fastener is needed.
