Couch down
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001375
To lay a thread, cord or other thick strand along a line on the surface of fabric and fasten it down with small stitches of a second, finer thread worked across it at intervals. Embroiderers use the technique for strands too thick or fragile to be pulled through the cloth, such as gold thread. In couching the laid strand stays on the surface, whereas in stem stitch the working thread itself passes through the fabric.
