Couching

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001376

The process in papermaking of transferring the wet, newly formed sheet of paper pulp from the wire mesh mold onto a felt blanket for pressing and drying. This delicate operation consolidates the pulp fibers into a cohesive sheet before most of the water is removed. In modern paper machines, this transfer is performed by rollers and suction devices that lift the wet web from the forming fabric onto the press section felt.
