Crunch

The grinding noise produced when attempting to engage a gear in a manual transmission without properly disengaging the clutch or synchronizing the gear speeds. This sound indicates metal-on-metal contact between the gears or synchronizer rings. Repeated crunching can lead to accelerated wear and damage to transmission components.
