Deadhead
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001599
To operate a truck or piece of agricultural equipment, such as a combine or tractor, without carrying a load or performing its primary function. This occurs when a vehicle travels empty to a pickup point or returns to its base after a delivery or completing fieldwork. Deadhead mileage represents non-productive travel time and fuel consumption, which contractors factor into their operating costs and billing rates.
