Detention time

The period of time a driver or vehicle is delayed at a loading or unloading facility beyond the agreed-upon free time. This waiting period can incur additional charges, known as demurrage or detention fees, paid by the shipper or receiver to the carrier. It is a common issue in the trucking and logistics industry.
