An optical amplifier, known as an Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier, that amplifies a weak optical signal directly without needing to convert it to an electrical signal. A section of optical fiber is doped with the rare-earth element erbium, which is excited by a pump laser, causing it to emit photons at the same wavelength as the incoming signal. EDFAs operate in the 1550 nm wavelength band where optical fiber has its lowest transmission loss.
