Electrophoresis

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002011

The migration and separation of charged molecules or colloidal particles through a fluid or gel medium under the influence of an electric field. Positively charged particles (cations) move toward the negative electrode, while negatively charged particles (anions) move toward the positive electrode. In power plant water chemistry, capillary electrophoresis is used to analyze trace ionic impurities, detecting contaminants at parts-per-billion levels to prevent corrosion and scaling in boiler systems.
