An active matrix electrophoretic display, a form of electronic paper in which charged pigment particles in microcapsules or microcells move when a thin-film transistor backplane applies an electric field to each pixel. The panel is bistable, so it holds an image without power and draws current only when the picture changes. Small AMEPD modules are used in e-readers, electronic shelf labels, and similar low-refresh devices.
