Fishing space

The space on the side of a rail, between the underside of the head and the top of the foot, that a fishplate occupies. The fishplate bears on the sloping surfaces above and below this space to hold the rail ends in line. Its height and angles differ between rail sections, so a fishplate fits only the section it was made for.
