Flong

A papier-mâché material used in stereotyping to create a mold of a composed page of type. This flexible sheet is pressed onto the type form, capturing the impression of the characters and images. Once dried and hardened, the flong serves as a matrix into which molten metal is poured to cast a stereotype plate for printing.
