Generation loss

The degradation in quality that occurs when a signal, image, or audio recording is copied, re-encoded, or processed multiple times. Each successive generation introduces further artifacts, noise, or loss of detail, particularly with analog formats or lossy digital compression. This effect is noticeable when making copies of copies of a video tape or repeatedly saving a JPEG image.
