Gunnie
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-002690
A coarse, strong sack made of jute or a similar fiber, used in mining operations for transporting materials. These bags were filled with ore, mineral samples, or waste rock for manual removal from a stope or development heading, particularly in smaller-scale or historical mines without mechanized haulage. The term is a variant of gunny sack, and a filled bag could weigh between 50 and 100 pounds, depending on the density of the material being carried.
Coarse sacks woven from jute or burlap, used in mining for handling materials or for construction. Miners filled them with ore or waste rock for transport in areas inaccessible to machinery, or stacked them to build temporary walls for ventilation control or ground support. In modern exploration, geologists still use similar sample bags, often made of plastic or canvas, to collect and transport rock or soil specimens for laboratory analysis, with each bag carefully labeled with its location.
