Brood
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006816
The collection of impurities, such as slag, scoria, and other dross, that floats on the surface of molten metal during smelting or refining processes. This layer forms as lighter, non-metallic components separate from the heavier liquid metal. The brood is skimmed off before casting to prevent inclusions and defects in the final metal product, leaving a purer ingot or casting.
