Varroa

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006420

An external parasitic mite that attacks and feeds on honey bees, representing a primary threat to colonies worldwide. The mite, Varroa destructor, attaches to the body of adult bees and brood, weakening them by consuming their fat body tissue and spreading viruses. Beekeepers employ integrated pest management strategies, including chemical treatments with miticides, drone brood removal, and the use of screened bottom boards to control infestations, with treatment thresholds typically between 2 to 3 mites per 100 bees.
