The central portion of a tree trunk, comprising the pith and the innermost growth rings. This part of the wood is generally denser and darker than the surrounding sapwood, having ceased its active role in water transport. In lumber, the presence of heartwood indicates a mature section of the tree and influences its structural properties and resistance to decay.
