An Intelligent Electronic Device, which is a microprocessor-based controller used to manage and protect power system equipment like circuit breakers, transformers, and capacitor banks. IEDs acquire data from sensors, process it using programmed logic, and can issue control commands automatically for protection, control, and monitoring. These devices are fundamental components of modern substation automation and smart grid systems, communicating over networks using protocols like IEC 61850.
