USART
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-006385
A microelectronic circuit, the Universal Synchronous/Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter, that converts parallel data from a central processing unit into a serial format for transmission and vice versa. It operates in two primary modes: synchronous, which uses a separate clock line to time data transfer, and asynchronous, which uses start and stop bits to frame the data. This peripheral is a standard feature in microcontrollers used for industrial automation, smart meters, and SCADA systems, communicating over protocols like RS-232 or RS-485.
