In-line engine

A type of internal combustion engine where all cylinders are arranged in a single row along a common crankshaft. This configuration provides a compact design and simplifies the valvetrain compared to other engine layouts. In-line engines are common in passenger cars and light trucks, with four-cylinder and six-cylinder variants being prevalent.
