Infield

The land on a farm that is actively and regularly cultivated, typically located closer to the farmstead. This land receives more intensive management, including frequent manuring and crop rotation, making it more fertile than outlying fields. The term historically distinguished this productive arable land from the 'outfield', which was land used for grazing or less frequent cultivation and received less fertilizer.
