Interphase
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003057
A three-dimensional region of finite thickness that forms between two distinct phases in a material, such as the area between a reinforcing fiber and the polymer matrix in a composite. Unlike a simple two-dimensional interface, an interphase has its own set of properties that are a gradient between those of the two adjoining bulk phases. The chemical and mechanical characteristics of this region strongly influence the overall performance and failure modes of the material.
