Loop
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003430
A section of track that diverges from a main line and later rejoins it, forming a parallel path. These are constructed on single-track lines to permit trains traveling in opposite directions to pass one another or for one train to overtake another. The length of a passing loop must be sufficient to accommodate the longest train expected to use the line, plus signals and safety margins at either end.
