Managed motorway

A section of highway where active traffic management techniques are used to regulate traffic flow and increase capacity. These systems employ methods such as variable speed limits displayed on overhead gantries, ramp metering to control vehicle entry, and the use of the hard shoulder as a running lane during peak periods. The first such system in the United Kingdom was implemented on a section of the M42 motorway near Birmingham in 2006.
