Methyl t-butyl ether

A chemical compound, also known as MTBE, formerly used as a gasoline additive to increase octane and reduce carbon monoxide emissions. It was phased out in many regions due to concerns about groundwater contamination from leaking fuel tanks. This compound is highly soluble in water and can impart an unpleasant taste and odor to drinking water.
