Monton

A heap of crushed silver or gold ore mixed with reagents, forming the basic unit of treatment in the historic patio and pan amalgamation processes. Each monton, weighing several tons, was systematically worked by treading with mules or by mechanical agitation to promote the chemical reaction between the mercury and precious metals. The process could take several weeks to complete for each batch.
