Mud slab

A thin, non-structural layer of unreinforced concrete poured over the ground before the main foundation slab. Its function is to create a clean, dry, and level working surface for subsequent construction activities, such as laying out rebar and installing waterproofing membranes. Mud slabs, also called rat slabs, are typically 2 to 4 inches (50 to 100 mm) thick and use a low-strength concrete mix.
