Mud

The circulating drilling fluid, a water-based, oil-based or synthetic-based liquid pumped down the drill string and back up the annulus during well drilling. It cools and lubricates the bit, carries cuttings to the surface and holds back formation fluids with hydrostatic pressure. Its density and viscosity are adjusted with additives such as barite and bentonite.
