Notchboard

A structural board, also known as a stringer, that has a series of notches cut into its top edge to support the treads and risers of a staircase. The notchboard runs diagonally from one floor to the next, providing the primary framework for the steps. The horizontal cuts, or runs, hold the treads, while the vertical cuts, or rises, support the risers.
