Tread

The horizontal surface of a step in a staircase or ladder, upon which a person places their foot. It provides the primary walking surface and must be designed to withstand repeated loads and abrasion. Building codes specify minimum dimensions for tread depth and maximum variations between treads to maintain safety and accessibility.
