An abbreviation for National Standard Thread, the most common type of threaded connection for fire hose couplings and hydrants in the United States. Also referred to as NH (National Hose) thread, it is a coarse-threaded design that allows for rapid, secure hand-tightening in emergency situations. The specifications for NST, including threads per inch and outer diameter for different hose sizes, are maintained under NFPA 1963.
