A tool for forming internal screw threads inside a pre-drilled hole, a process known as tapping. The tool has a threaded section with multiple longitudinal flutes that create cutting surfaces to remove material and form the threads. Taps are made from hardened steel and are specified by the thread standard they produce, such as the Unified Thread Standard (UTS) or ISO metric screw thread.
