Flank

The working side surface of a gear tooth between its tip and its root, or the side of a screw thread connecting crest and root. A gear flank follows a curved profile, usually an involute, whereas a thread flank is straight in axial section. The two flanks of an ISO metric thread meet at a 60 degree included angle.
