Flangeway

A gap or channel provided in a railway track structure, such as at a level crossing or a switch, to accommodate the wheel flanges of rolling stock. This space allows the wheel to pass without obstruction while the tread remains supported by the railhead. Flangeways are measured from the gauge line of the running rail to the guard rail or other obstruction.
