Common crossing
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001262
The component of a railway turnout where the rails of two tracks intersect, permitting wheel flanges to pass from one track to the other. It consists of a point where the two running rails meet and two wing rails that guide the wheels through the gap. The angle of the crossing, known as the frog angle, determines the speed at which trains can safely pass through the turnout.
