Sledge brake

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005351

A type of emergency or parking brake used on trams and light rail vehicles, consisting of a skid or shoe that is forced down onto the track surface. When activated, the sledge, often a wooden block or metal shoe, creates a high level of friction directly with the rail head to bring the vehicle to a stop. This system is independent of the wheel brakes and is particularly effective on steep gradients or in low-adhesion conditions.
