Prestress

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-004496

The application of an external force to concrete or other structural members before or during the application of service loads. This introduces compressive stresses that counteract the tensile stresses induced by subsequent loading, thereby increasing the member's strength and stiffness. Prestressing is achieved using high-strength steel tendons, either pre-tensioned before concrete placement or post-tensioned after it has hardened.
